Lymphatic massage is a deeply relaxing therapy that is performed directly onto the skin, involving a range of specialised and pain-free rhythmic pumping techniques.

What is the lymphatic system?

The lymphatic system is a delicate road map of vessels that circulate lymphatic fluid around the body. It flushes out toxins, bacteria and other waste from your water system. Circulation of lymph is important for a strong immune system as it aids the transport of proteins, water, fats, vitamins, and cells.

A healthy lymphatic system will flow easily. However, this flow can become sluggish and lead to a build-up of fluid, bacteria or other cells. This can cause infection, inflamed organs, bloating or simply swelling. Your lymphatic system relies on the movement of your body to transport lymphatic fluid to the heart and circulate it around the body.

What is manual lymphatic drainage?

Manual lymphatic drainage is a hands-on massage technique which helps move lymphatic fluid around the body. This fluid moves through the lymphatic system to the lymph nodes before entering into the venous system. Unlike the circulatory system which pumps blood, the lymphatic system relies on muscles and physical movement, and manual lymphatic drainage aids this process.

Is lymphatic drainage massage for me?

Lymphatic drainage massage is a massage technique that assists circulation of the lymphatic fluid. There are many benefits of this treatment, including:

  • Improves fluid circulation and prevents lymphatic build-up
  • Activates the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing stress and lowering blood pressure and heart rate
  • Increases circulation and tissue temperature
  • Helps to flush toxins and infection indicators to lymph nodes so the body can mount an immune response
  • Transfers lymph fluid to the venous system so it can be filtered by our organs
  • Treatment at the onset of an acute injury following an accident or surgery
  • Enhances recovery after cosmetic surgery
  • May assist as an anti-inflammatory technique for many conditions including acne and burns
  • Helps people suffering from fluid retention and oedema
  • Assists in making terminally ill patients more comfortable and easing their pain
  • Relieves symptoms of chronic disorders such as arthritis, PCOS, sinusitis, headaches, migraines and lymphoedema

These benefits may help with the symptoms of several conditions such as

  • Lymphoedema (build up lymphatic fluid)
  • Sports injuries
  • Cordes (axillary web syndrome)
  • Lymph node dysfunction or removal
  • Pregnancy related edema
  • Headaches
  • Stress disorders

What to expect in a session?

Your therapist will perform a case history to determine your specific needs and answer any questions you may have about the treatment. So, how does manual lymphatic drainage work?

  • Treatment takes between 60-90 minutes and is most often done while lying on your back in a relaxed position
  • It involves hand-on motions on the chest, arms, abdomen, legs, feet, neck and face
  • Manual lymphatic drainage works best when clearing multiple areas associated with lymph nodes
  • Regardless of the targeted area, manual lymphatic drainage always starts and finished around the thoracic duct on the left upper chest
  • Some people may experience increased urination, saliva production and swallowing, increased thirst and dizziness.
  • Effects may be seen straight away, but could continue over the following days

After treatment you may feel lighter, have a deeper night’s sleep and increased alertness. If you suffer from pain and swelling, you may notice a reduction in inflammation within a few treatments. Click here to find more information from Better Health (Victorian Gov) or book online here!
