3 Things We Wish Patients Knew Before Googling Their Symptoms
If you’ve ever typed something like “why does my back hurt when I sneeze” into Google at 11:47pm… welcome. You’re not alone.
At Infinity, we see patients every day who arrive equal parts sore and stressed because Dr Google has convinced them they’ve got anything from a slipped disc to a life-altering condition — often before anyone has actually assessed them.
Osteopathy may help with a wide range of injuries and pain conditions, but before you spiral down a rabbit hole of worst-case scenarios, here are three things we really wish patients knew before Googling their symptoms.
1. Pain Does Not Automatically Mean Damage
This is the big one.
Pain is not a direct measure of how “bad” an injury is. You can have:
- Significant pain with very little tissue damage
- Minimal pain with significant structural findings
- Pain that lingers long after tissues may have recovered
Google tends to skip this nuance entirely.
What pain does reflect is a complex mix of:
- Tissue sensitivity
- Nervous system response
- Load, stress, sleep, and past injuries
At Infinity, our osteopaths regularly see patients who are frightened by scan reports or online symptom lists — only to discover their body is actually far more resilient than they’ve been led to believe.
Translation: scary symptoms don’t automatically mean scary problems.
2. Symptoms Rarely Point to Just One Cause
Google loves a neat answer.
Your body… does not.
That shoulder pain?
- Could be related to how you move
- How you work
- How you sleep
- An old injury you forgot about
- Or how your nervous system is coping with stress
Most pain conditions don’t have a single “broken bit” that needs fixing. That’s why a symptom-only approach may not always consider the bigger picture.
Osteopathy looks at how your whole body functions together, not just where it hurts. This is especially important for:
- Recurrent pain
- Pain that moves around
- Pain that flares without a clear reason
Which, conveniently, are the exact things Google struggles to explain.
3. More Information Isn’t Always Better Information
Let’s be honest — Googling symptoms often makes people feel worse, not better.
Common outcomes include:
- Increased anxiety
- Fear of movement
- Over-resting when movement is actually helpful
- Delayed treatment because “I thought it would go away”
A proper osteopathic assessment may provide something Google can’t:
- Context
- A clearer understanding of your symptoms
- A tailored plan for your body
At Infinity, we take the time to explain what’s going on in clear, human language — not medical jargon or worst-case scenarios.
So… When Should You Stop Googling and Get It Checked?
If your pain is:
- Lingering longer than expected
- Returning again and again
- Affecting your sleep, work, or training
- Making you nervous to move
…it’s probably time to let a real human assess it, not just googling your symptoms!
How Osteopathy at Infinity May Help
Osteopathy focuses on improving:
- Movement
- Load tolerance
- Understanding nervous system regulation and its influence on symptoms
- Overall function — not just symptom relief
