Yoga and Pilates
When and why did you start yoga and pilates?
I started pilates in 2014. My background is clinical pilates, which I began with another osteo clinic. I’ve always had an interest in sport, exercise and rehab. Since working at the clinic it’s shown me how it may be of benefit to clients and be seen as a different form of treatment.
In 2017, I tried yoga as a recommendation to help with stress and anxiety, plus I’ve generally been curious about it for quite some time beforehand. It’s helped me gain further insight into having mental clarity and mindfulness, which allows me to be in tune with my body and its needs!
What are the benefits?
From my experience over the years, I’ve learnt that there is a strong connection between the mind and body. They enforce muscle training to develop better control, strength and flexibility. Which leads to injury prevention, improved posture, balance and general health and fitness. Both yoga and pilates are also suitable for all age groups.
What changes have you noticed both physically and mentally since starting yoga/pilates?
I’ve suffered pain-related scoliosis most of my life. Since pilates, I’ve physically grown stronger, more fit and flexible. This has helped support my body and skeletal system, making the pain more manageable and allowing me to enjoy daily activities in life. I look upon yoga as my self-care routine; it’s a mental coping tool to assist with stress and anxiety. It uses breath, as its main principle, which links into mindfulness and being present in the moment.
How do you find time between work and fitness?
I struggle… but it’s possible! Once I had a good grasp of yoga techniques and body awareness, I practiced a lot at home. It is convenient and fits into my schedule. At a studio, twice a week, I do pilates for 30 minutes. I try to prioritise my health and mental wellbeing, to then be able to help others.
What have you learned about yourself since starting yoga and pilates?
It pushes me out of my comfort zone and challenges me mentally and physically. I’ve learnt that my body is capable of more than what I thought. 8 months ago I was never able to touch my toes, but now after consistent training, I’ve exceeded my own expectations. You go on a journey with your body and sometimes it surprises you!
What is the difference between yoga and pilates? Which one should I do?
Honestly, I feel like they both complement one another. Clinical pilates has a rehabilitation focus and builds strength through resistance, whereas yoga improves general energy and vitality.
