Osteopathy Myth Buster: What We Actually Do (and Don’t Do)
At Infinity Health & Osteo, we hear this all the time:
“You’re an osteopath? Isn’t that just bones and backs?”
We get it — osteopathy is often misunderstood. So today, we’re busting the most common myths we hear in the clinic. Whether you’re a curious patient or a chronic myth believer, it’s time to set the record straight.
Let’s dive in.
Myth 1: “Osteopathy… that’s backs, isn’t it?”
Yes, we treat backs — a lot. But we don’t stop there.
Osteopaths assess and manage a range of musculoskeletal concerns throughout the body. Think:
-
Hip, knee and ankle pain
-
Arthritic conditions
-
Pregnancy-related discomfort
-
Even dizziness and vertigo
If you’re experiencing pain or discomfort, an osteopathic assessment may help determine whether osteopathy is appropriate for you. Not sure? Call us on 9846 2800 and we’ll let you know.

Myth 2: “Osteopaths just treat bones”
Totally understandable — the word ‘osteo’ does mean bone. And yes, the founder of osteopathy, Andrew Taylor Still, once advertised himself as a “bonesetter.”
But let’s just say… we’ve evolved.
Modern osteopaths treat bones and:
-
Joints
-
Muscles
-
Fascia
-
Nerves
-
Circulatory systems
In other words, we treat the whole person, not just a part. Osteopathy is built on the principle that everything in the body is connected. The body is interconnected, and our approach considers how different areas may influence each other.
Myth 3: “Osteos, physios and chiros are the same”
This one’s popular — and kind of true… but not really.
Osteopaths, physiotherapists, and chiropractors often treat similar conditions using similar techniques. Where we differ is in philosophy and approach.
Osteos:
-
Take a holistic view of your body
-
Consider the whole person and their individual presentation
-
Consider contributing factors rather than focusing only on symptoms
But honestly? If your practitioner listens, communicates well, and helps you feel better — they’re doing a good job, regardless of the letters after their name.
We value the osteopathic approach and the way it considers each person’s individual needs. Come see what we mean!
Myth 4: “The osteopath will crack your back”
Sometimes we do, sometimes we don’t.
Spinal manipulation (aka cracking) is just one tool in our very full toolkit. If we use it, it’s because:
-
We think it may help
-
You’re comfortable with it
We spend 4-5 years studying at university to become an osteopath, and we learn lots of amazing techniques along the way. We’re trained to spot when cracking is appropriate — and when it’s not. Other techniques may also be considered, and treatment is tailored to suit your individual presentation and preferences.
Bottom line: you’re in control. Not a fan of cracking? Just let us know.
Myth 5: “Osteopathic treatment hurts”
Spoiler alert: it shouldn’t.
We aim to reduce your pain, not add to it. Some techniques may involve less pressure, while others may involve more direct contact, depending on your presentation and the approach selected.
Yes, some treatments — like releasing tight hip flexors (if you know, you know) — can be uncomfortable. Some techniques may feel uncomfortable for some people, and we encourage you to communicate with your practitioner throughout your appointment. We’re good at reading faces, but we’d rather hear it from you.
We hope this blog helped clear up some of the mystery around osteopathy. If you still have questions, or want to learn more about how osteopathy may support your individual needs, book in or give us a call. We’re always happy to talk you through it.
